Before the test is given, applicants will be invited to FREE in-person tutorial sessions, which will provide valuable test- and note-taking tips, as well as simple math and reading-comprehension exercises, so when it’s time to take the test you’ll know what to expect.

Physical Test & Preparation
If you passed the written exam, you will need to pass the DCAS Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), which includes an agility and strength test. FDNY offers a 12-week preparation program to help you prepare and pass the exam.

ABOUT THIS STEP

Mentorship Opportunity

The Firefighter Candidate Mentorship Program (FFCMP) is voluntary partnership available to Firefighter Candidates who have passed their written exam and whose list numbers have been reached by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Candidates will be paired with veteran Firefighters who will provide them with guidance and support throughout their hiring process. The Mentorship Program will span throughout the Candidates time at CPAT training and, should they be appointed, through their time at the Fire Academy. All Candidates are encouraged to participate once their list numbers have been reached.

Fire Academy Training
To graduate, you’ll need to successfully complete an 18-week classroom and physical fitness program that includes fire-service training. Overall grades at the Fire Academy include an assessment of in-class exams, academics and physical fitness performance.
